Special Offerings at Carnage XX

As the countdown to Carnage XX marches on, we wanted to highlight some special offerings at the convention this year. Falling outside the usual categories like board games or miniatures, these are the special kinds of events you often find only at conventions.

Extra Life Fundraising

Team NEG returns to Carnage to lead the charge in raising donations for Extra Life, the charity that benefits Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Highlights include the Dungeon Crawl Classics meatgrinder adventure “Prince Charming, Reanimator,” the Star Wars cantina LARP “Episode 3.25: Incident at Kaba,” and a raffle of many, many donated prizes. You can hear it all straight from the folks behind Team NEG through their Q&A on Victory Condition Gaming.

Improvised Weapons Comedy Dungeons & Dragons Shows

The Burlington-based actual play podcast Improvised Weapons, featuring improv comedians playing Dungeons & Dragons, makes their Carnage, convention and live performance debut with two shows on Friday evening of the convention, November 3rd at 7 and 9pm. Horses may be punched. Sample some episodes of the podcast itself, then check out the cast’s recent appearance on Victory Condition Gaming, where they talked about role-playing, comedy and who would win a mayonnaise-drinking contest.

Ghost Stories with Golden Goblin Press

Oscar Rios, owner of Golden Goblin Press and Call of Cthulhu writer extraordinaire, hosts late night ghost stories by the fireside at 11:30pm on Friday. Tell your own story for a chance to win one of Golden Goblin Press’ horror fiction collections, or just come to listen if you dare.

Sip and Felt

Saturday evening, Scratch Makerspace teaches you a new craft while you make some fun and geeky needle felted creatures. Learn to make needle felted models of your favorite characters, or an adorable critter. Materials fee applies. See the event listing for details.

Gemhammer & Sons Dungeons & Dragons Live Game

Gemhammer & Sons‘ on-going live game, traveling from convention to convention, arrives at Carnage on Saturday night. Catch up on previous episodes and then settle in for the show as the party tries to get something, anything, accomplished.

Gamers for a Cure

Gamers for a Cure will be raising money for cancer research with a raffle in the Northstar vendors’ room, and the Dungeons & Dragons tournament “The Gauntlet!”

Cube of Death Pub Trivia

Now in its 7th year at Carnage as a late Saturday night tradition, Cube of Death is pub trivia with a role-playing twist. Assemble your elite squad of minutiae-masters, discover whether your team will play as the sneaky thief, the doughty warrior or other character class, then answer questions plumbing the depths of nerd trivia to do damage to your competitors and knock them out of the game!

Check out the special events category on Carnage’s Tabletop.Events page for all these and more!

Extra Life at Carnage Royale

Extra Life charity logo. Slogan: "Play games. Heal kids." Benefiting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

We are happy to announce that Extra Life is coming to Carnage Royale!

Extra Life is a 24 hour gaming marathon to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Players sign up to join the Extra Carnage team, ask the people in your life to donate, then at Carnage Royale play games for 24 hours! The money you raise will go to your local hospital to help kids.

Oh, and don’t worry, it’s not 24 straight hours of gaming. Bathroom breaks are highly encouraged!

Organizer Edwin has exciting news:

Our Extra Life extravaganza at Carnage Royale will kick off with a multi-table, high-action, DCC tournament of Carnival of the Damned Friday at 7 PM. The Carnival of the Damned is a Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG zero level adventure with tournament style play. Characters who survive gradually uncover the sinister purpose of the carnival and its twisted overseer, the Black Jester! Play one character or many, those that survive the most encounters can win prizes and all can take home nightmares.

Other events planned for the 24-hour period between Friday at 7 and Saturday at 7 include Saturday Morning Cartoons (kids helping kids), Midnight Fiasco, and some very exciting exclusive Call of Cthulhu content. More info on all these events in the coming weeks.

Extra Life Carnage RoyaleYou can participate in Extra Life by playing other kinds of games, too. All of the time you spend playing games during the weekend goes toward your 24 hours. This includes RPGs, board games, miniatures, Diplomacy and even pickup games you play with your friends! There are board games that can be checked out outside the Oscar Wilde room, so grab some gamers and add to your hours with a pickup game.

Since you are going to be playing games at Carnage Royale anyway, why not sign up and raise some money for a good cause? Join the Extra Carnage team if you are willing to be a fundraiser.

If you are running a game and would like it to be in support of Extra Life, please include “This game supports Extra Life” in the game description. If you have already submitted your game and would like to add this statement please email Carnage staff member Nyssa at missnyss17@gmail.com

Keep checking the Carnage Lounge on Facebook for updates and consider joining the Extra Life team to help make a difference for children in your area!

Carnagecast 35: 24 Hour Charity Gaming Marathon at Quarterstaff Games

In episode thirty-five of Carnagecast, Jeff Durochia and Brennan Martin tell us about the charity gaming event Extra Life and the 24 gaming marathon they’re hosting at Quarterstaff Games in Burlington, Vermont to raise money for the local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Care.

This October, Quarterstaff opens its doors from 8:00am Saturday the 20th to 8:00am Sunday the 21st to host 24 hours of tabletop gaming to raise money. Highlights include midnight Draft ‘Til You Drop for Magic: the Gathering, A Game of Thrones utilizing the Dance with Dragons scenario, a warlord rumble for Warhammer 40,000, many more board games, role-playing games including Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons, Legend of the 5 Rings and more — Brennan is crafting three dimensional tiles for Settlers of Catan. One twist for Extra Life players that Quarterstaff offers: a $5 entry donation gains players tokens they can use to bend rules of the games they play. Those tokens translate into more donations for the Team Quarterstaff fundraising efforts.

Whether people come for the full 24 hours or drop in as their schedule allows, Jeff hopes to provide a mini-convention atmosphere, allowing people to try games and experiment with new and untried games. And, of course, people can contribute whatever they’re able to the fundraising efforts. Donations are just as important as pledges.  With his perspective analyzing birth statistics for the health department, Brennan reminds us there are living, breathing people who will benefit directly from the money raised through Extra Life.
